Vanishing Point 11 December 2012

So its fucking xmas time again. Other people's burst of joy at the end of the year just plain shits me.  The same fuckers wishing me merry bloody xmas were flipping me the bird in August in a pique of road rage, pissing in my front yard on the way home from the pub in April and being general ass holes for 11 and a half months of the year.  I'm sick of being nice to people all year and being shat on (not nuggets, the fruity stuff with high stick stench) and then expected to Kris Kringle like nothing has happened. You know what. Xmas is like confession to all modern wankers, it's like to them a gift or two wipes all their sins and the father of consumerism will accept them into the mall of wonders when they die. Which cant be soon enough.

And by the way, thank fucking god for annual leave in this country.  Working over xmas whilst every dullard fuck inflicts their tourist persona elsewhere is my idea of the best present ever. woo hoo.  i love that you get frequent flyer points on your monsanto fed grocery bill. I get the office to myself and can work in peace without having to hear more bloody shite about commercial television or listen to middle age zombies recite other peoples opinions about other peoples lives.

Is there any respite to the inane banalities of consumerist, jones keep upperers, brain dead waste of spacers? luckily there is.  Tune into www.threedradio.com  perhaps the worlds only totally volunteer run radio station.  No play lists, real people and only one live cover band playing the same song every week.  You'd think this place is a Hoot if you believed everything you read but in fact it's a gas.  So don my trousers Morrissy you son of a bitch and go get fucked, leave the art to the rest of us you sell out fat fuck.

Tonight's breath of fresh air is:

(BAND/ARTIST, Track. Album)

Vanishing Point 13 November 2012

Of course Adelaide is shut at 9.30pm.  What the fuck do you expect. This city has no desire to be part of the real world.  There are no real arts venues, no funding for arts (oh. sorry did you read arts as industry... well you are the problem asshole), apathy, apathy, apathy.  Every few years we pretend like desperate dicks to be arty by having a fringe/festival.  And guess what? We fool everyone.  But when our visitors fly out from our substandard airport we go back to a hick country town and anything new is poo pood again.  Even our best community radio station is partnering with local government (WTF!). Venues are shutting, noise restriction legislation is killing bands/venues and every other mutherfukker is trying to write the next jingle for 2013's new car lines.

Here have some sanity..... 93.7FM Tuesdays 11-1 www.threedradio.com (while it lasts)

Vanishing Point 30 October 2012

Welcome to another VP. It's Tuesday night again.  This Saturday 3 November 2012 is a gig at the Land Of Promise Hotel in Adelaide dedicated to remembering the musical achievements of Renistair EJ (aka Ren). I acknowledge the passing of Ren and his absence in the artistic circles of Adelaide music. Of note is a project driven by Ren and Co called Gutter Jazz which consisted of a number of Adelaide musicians doing an improv set mostly around Ren's vocalisations.  The guys named here were also in other bands as well as those bands bracketed.  Ren (Bloodloss, Lubricated Goat), Pete Kenny (Slub), Michael Tohl (Twenty Second Sect), Wex Dabbler (Grong Grong), Chris Morley (Leather Messiah), AJ Morley (Leather Messiah), Mike Baraniec (Fiendish Cavendish) also appeared were Nathan Dale (Yog Sothoth) and Dorothy Pawlowski (Roadside Slasher).  Gutter Jazz did one live set but recorded four sessions between 2007 and 2008. Ren went on to form another similar project with Wex Dabbler and more magical Adelaide artists called Viva Vas Defrens.

To quote one who knows Adelaide, Bands and Experimental Music: Adelaide is Coopers Beer, Dope and Old Men.  That describes Gutter Jazz. Full Fucking Stop.  Land Of Promise Saturday 3 November 2012.

Vanishing Point 9 October 2012

Welcome to the first daylight savings edition (2012) of Vanishing Point.  I cant help but write about a gig i was (and played a bit in) on the weekend. Brett Parish (Adelaide Music Ambassador) ended a project (Startakit) with a live performance of an album that he conceptualised and produced as well as played all instruments on.  What blew me away is that he managed to pull together over a dozen musos to play the album on stage from track one to the end.  To my knowledge that has not been done in Adelaide, sure plenty of albums have been released with the one artist doing the air pushing, knob twiddling and product packaging but to put the entire thing on stage is another thing altogether.  Well done Brett.

Some good current and historical information about experimental music and film in central Victoria (Australia) is here.

A great compilation is Drone From The Underside Of The Earth out on Art As Catharsis.  Check out the bandcamp link for a download here.

These tracks were taken from the library of 3D Radio (93.7FM).  Unfortunately in South Australia the majority of experimental music is distributed in ways other than FM radio.  Thus the set below is representative of only a small sector of South Australian experimental music.

The opening track from Peterhead is dedicated to Mr Renistair EJ (ex Lubricated Goat, Bloodloss and Viva Vas Defrens just to name a few) who passed earlier this week.  Just google the name and you'll get the history.  He will be missed by many in Adelaide who see music as art and not a fucking industry.

Vanishing Point 24 July 2012

Last weekend (20 July) I was on my way to Sydney to see Keith Fullarton Whitman and a bunch of Australian experimental acts at the Embassy.  My flight was due into Sydney at 8pm giving me enough time to get to the gig (easily).  As my plane left Adelaide I had that horrible sinking feeling as I realized I'd left my keys to the house in Sydney at home.  After travelling to a reltive's house to pick up a spare set and having a chat (as you do) I noticed it was 10.30pm and an hour travel to a gig that was going to finish at midnight.  Shit! I'd missed the gig..... so I had a couple of guiness and watched rugby hilights.......

Vanishing Point 19 June 2012

A week can go so bloody fast these days and the last seven days sped by.  I was fortunate enough to have my air-conditioning unit go critical on me the other day blasting my workspace with hot air whilst the rest of my building was a balmy 19 degrees throughout.  Fortunate because i got to crawl through my ceiling and get acquainted with an ancient unit that hummed in a most fantastic way.  I think I spent almost an hour marvelling at the resonant tone and the phasing generated by the echo in the confined space whilst i wrestled with aluminium flexible ducting. And oh my god it rained as well (on the tin roof) adding a texture to the sound that made me cry at the thought that it all could have been recorded for others to enjoy.

On a darker note i've been revisiting the Hellraiser Octopulet and managed to get through three movies in seven days (5 movies to go plus Dark City).  Watching these films in 15 minute instalments throughout the day is a great way to increase the tension inherent in the plot.  Its not that i have any form of attention deficit and cant focus for an entire film, i'm just to busy to sit for 2 hours in a row but lucky enough to have my own business where i can do what the hell i want between client contacts.....

Vanishing Point 5 June 2012

Another bloody cold night in Adelaide.  I've had Kikuchi Yukinori on high rotation again this week and strangely EVERYTHING has slowed down to the pace of that album, even peak hour traffic. Spooky. But that's the new quantum reality for you.

You know those shit indi bands who compete for their focus track to sell the next new car?  Well i was so very pleased to hear a cut up noise track selling the new Peugeot 508 (even though the point of the track was to highlight how silent the car can be inside).

Vanishing Point 15 May 2012

Welcome to another Vanishing Point insertion. Today has been a landmark day for me...my daughter's second birthday.  The day was one long episode of opening gifts and exploring new things.  Luckily we are huge book buyers (and borrowers) and this meant most gifts were books (Phew! I loath plastic shit fashioned into toys and force fed to children).

Once again i'm trotting out Psychic TV but this time its a long long long track.....the awesome trip Cold Dark Matter.  Fifty eight minutes over a number of movements ending in spoken word.

It was good to flick through the new releases section here at 3D Radio and find a Don Preston reissue of early experimental music.  I'll be pulling out my Mothers Of Invention tapes during the week.....

Track List
(BAND, Track. Album).
1. MARTIN BLAND, Track 2.  Randomised Control Trials
2. DON PRESTON, Electronic Music.  Filters, Oscillators and Envelopes 1967-1982.
3. PSYCHIC TV, Cold Dark Matter.  Cold Dark Matter (1992).
4. MONARCH, Black Becomes The Sun.  Omens (2012).
5. GUPPA D'IMPROVVISAZIONE, Eflot. Nuova Consonanza.

This is the link to Martin Bland's blog.  Some good tunes available here.

Check out Monarch. This band gets better with each release.  Dead Men Tell No Tales was one of my favs in the year it was released. Sabot Noir was fantastic as well but Omens (2012) takes their down tempo to another dimension.  I dare say Omens has hints of the Grey Daturas especially the track Black Becomes the Sun.... Not a bad thing at all.....i still grieve the end of the Daturas.

Here is a link to Monarch....enjoy.

Catch you next week.
I'm off for a vanishing pint

Vanishing Point 8 May 2012

Welcome to another Vanishing Point episode! Tonight's show opened with White Tiger A:.A:. from the album launched in Adelaide on the weekend.  A great night kicked off by Monolith (Vic) with an intense controlled tone generated explosion.  I was loving the Monolith set but stupidly had not worn shoes to the gig and needed to return home to get them which meant that i missed the Kaos Kollectiv set.  Those guys rarely play and i'm kicking myself for not getting back in time to catch at least some of the set.  Die Like A God was fkn brilliant, an assault on the ears. Sean (DLAG) had little time between his set and White Tiger to 'white up' and take his place in the Tiger line up.
The White Tiger set was five people in various stages of ritual undress painted white creating rhythmic and non-rhytmic noise.  As with all things enjoyable it felt over all too soon and left me wanting more.  Thanks to Peter James from Ice Age Productions for organising the event and making the Tiger available to anyone willing to go on line and purchase a CD.

Adelaides psych-drone-noise outfit White Tiger A:. Tell your friends.  But dont pronounce the A:. A:. as it's silent and you'll sound like one of those newbies who have just discovered Sunn O))) and include the O))) in the name as O.

Week two for my innings of Vanishing Point.  During the week I managed to add a couple more Psychic TV albums to my collection and spent a few hours deciding which track to air on the show.

Look out for an upcoming gig with Adelaide's White Tiger A:.A:. to launch their album on IceAge Productions.

Vanishing Point 10 April 2012

Welcome to my first hit out on the first Vanishing Point. VP is the Experimental Music show on 3D Radio Tuesday evenings from 11pm to 1am.  3D Radio (93.7FM) broadcasts from Adelaide South Australia.  I would like to acknowledge GG Alan Bindig's contribution to the show over the past years.

Thanks for listening in or reading this blog.   For the next little while i'll select all tracks within the framework of 'this cant be played the same way twice'.  I started the show this week with Kawabata Mokoto's psychedelic outfit Acid Mothers Temple and the Melting Paradiso UFO, a band that i'll stick with as the opening artist for a few weeks.  Mokoto along with Koizumi Hajime, Suhara Keizo and Cotton Casino were the original Acid Mothers Temple line up with influence clearly in the Krautrock tradition (ie anti-rock, anti-mainstream etc). Throughout this blog i'll feature many of those 70's German bands and those bands/artists around the world who followed their lead.

Shout outs this week to Raw Sex, Matt O, Wex and Captain I.

Now the business.  If you are a creator of juicy experimental music either as a solo artist or band then send your stuff to 3D Radio. Vanishing Point is your show to get your art on air and on-line.  You can mail it to 3D Radio PO BOX 937 Stepney 5069 or drop it into the station at 48 Nelson Street Stepney (if you live in Adelaide).

Let me know what you think.  Email is vanishingpoint937@gmail.com.  I'm glad that YOU GIVE A SHIT enough to listen or give me your feedback.
